How to cite a webpage in APA 7
Webpages take a fuller date than books or articles when one is given, the page title is italicized (it stands alone — there is no larger italicized container), and the site name appears in plain type before the URL.
A worked example
The APA Style blog’s own “How to cite ChatGPT” post — a real page at a URL you can open.
Reference list entry

In-text citation
(McAdoo, 2023)
Why it looks like this
You identified this as a webpage.
- Author
- McAdoo, T. — A single author is written family name first, with given names reduced to initials.
- Title treatment
- “How to cite ChatGPT” is italicized — A webpage stands on its own, so APA italicizes its title.
- Date
- (2023, February 23) — A webpage publishes on a fast cycle, so the full date is given, not just the year.
- Source line
- “APA Style” is italicized as the website — The website is what carries the webpage — APA names it right after the title.
- Retrieval link
- https://apastyle.apa.org/blog/how-to-cite-chatgpt — No DOI is on record, so the URL is used instead — also with no trailing period.
Easily confused with
- report: If this were a report instead, the date would drop back to the year alone and there would be no separate container to name at all.
- video: If this were a video instead, the source line would be labeled a channel/platform rather than a website.
What Citeory checks on a webpage
These are the checks the engine runs on this source type — a reference missing any of them is flagged before you paste it into a paper:
- Missing title — required for website sources.
- Missing URL — required for website sources.
Citeory also verifies the source exists — records are checked against Crossref, DataCite, OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar and PubMed, so a reference that cannot be found anywhere is flagged rather than formatted. The citation above was produced by that same rules engine, not written by hand and not generated by AI.
